British Owls – Where Do They Nest?

Barn Owl Box

This ‘A frame’ box is hand-made from marine plywood treated with wood preservative and incorporates a landing platform, an inspection hatch and metal ridge capping for durability. Hinges and the door bolt are stainless steel. A nylon nut, bolt and washer are supplied for securing the box to the tree. The box is delivered ready assembled, apart from the landing platform which is supplied separately with the required fixings. Click here for pricing and delivery information.

Please note that Barn Owls and their nests are subject to legal protection – Schedules 1 and 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. For example it’s illegal to check nest sites or even to disturb a Barn Owl while it’s at or near a breeding site, unless you hold a special licence. See here for further legal information from the Barn Owl Conservation Network (BOCN).

Kent Bat Box

These boxes are hand-made from sawn Sussex oak. Bats are drawn to the rough timber as it gives them a good grip when crawling up through the slats to access the box. Rough internal surfaces make for a more comfortable environment. Boxes are suitable for fixing to walls, other vertical surfaces and trees.

Siting tips: – look for a high, sheltered position, with sunlight at some point during the day. Click here for pricing and delivery information.

Bug Box

This integral (i.e. fitted into walls) box is made from a variety of woods and is ideal for incorporating into the brick walls of raised beds. The oak face is drilled several times with a variety of drill sizes, to encourage a variety of bugs to take up residence. If brick slivers are to be added for brick matching, the oak is recessed further and the corresponding holes are also drilled into the brick.
